MYTHICAL CARS YOU CAN OWN IN SLOT FORM: «LANCIA LC2 GROUP C»

We start without anesthesia, with two illustrative videos of the Lancia that concerns us in this article.

To talk about the Lancia LC2 is to talk about the assault of this glorious brand on the cream of group C. Its resume includes several pole positions, fastest laps, podiums, and the occasional victory. But more was expected of it and of a sports structure accustomed to winning championships, not single victories. It should have become the antidote to Porsche and its army of 956, both official and private. But it did not carry out its threat to the Teutonic army.

It clearly contributed to enlarging the legend of Group C. We are left with the memory that the Lancia had the speed (devilish, without a doubt)… but it lacked the necessary reliability if it were to win the World Championship

In any case, today, for many enthusiasts, it remains one of the most beautiful examples that have crossed the Hunnadieres straight at full speed in Le Mans, or that have climbed the mythical Eau-Rouge de Spa. And without a doubt, they beautify our showcase and/or track in 1/32 scale. It is a display of engineering of the highest level. In this case it can be said that its beauty is more than skin deep!

What kind of car was the Lancia LC2?

The Lancia LC2 was the firm’s second project for the World Endurance Championship, within Group C. It is the successor (as its name suggests) of the LC1, which competed within Group 6 regulations.

Lancia’s approach was to continue exploiting the World Endurance Championship, taking into account the successes achieved by the predecessors of the LC2, which were the Lancia Beta in Gr.5 and the Lancia LC1 in Gr.6.

What firms and engineers participated in its development?

This group C car is a cocktail in which the following firms are recognized: chassis signed by Dallara, Reparto Lancia Corse and Abarth in its development, and to conclude, Ferrari, from which the V8 Biturbo engine comes.

What pilots did it have at its command?

To name a few: Riccardo Patrese, Michele Alboreto, Andrea de Cesaris, Mauro Baldi, Bob Wollek, Henri Pescarolo, Pierluigi Martini, Paolo Barilla, Bruno Giacomelli, Piercarlo Ghinzani, Hans Heyer, Teo Fabi…. Very competent hands as seen can see.

Did it enjoy sporting success ?

Unfortunately for Lancia and the fans, it had indisputable speed, but the lack of reliability deprived it of the success that was expected of it. He achieved a respectable number of fastest laps and pole positions, but an isolated number of victories and podiums.

In 51 participations in World Endurance races, it achieved:

  • 3 victories (1983 Imola, 1984 Kyalami, 1985 Spa-Francorchamps).
  • 13 Pole Positions
  • 11 Race fastest laps

What versions does the slot world offer us can we acquire of the Lancia LC2 in 1/32?

In another article on this blog dedicated to the Martini livery, some versions of the Lancia LC2 were reflected, which are the most popular among fans, although there are others from private teams worth mentioning.

Rating of slot versions?

In this article we focus on some of those produced by Slot.it, corresponding to the period 1984-1986. There are more versions made by Slot.it that do not appear in this article, and among the most illustrious and oldest, it is worth highlighting the Scalextric SRS version, but I have not had the opportunity to get one of them to date.

In the meantime, let’s delight in the details of some Slot.it units. As always, the attention to detail, proportions, and fidelity to the original in the various iterations that the Lancia LC2 has had in its sporting life is to be appreciated by the Italian manufacturer. It is clear that this has been a model made «with love» by the Italian manufacturer.

And needless to say, this model oozes speed from all sides.

How does it work in club races?

Slot.it’s Lancia LC2 is one of the regulars on the 1/32 Group C club racing scene. In my case, at the Costablanca club in Alicante we race with group C strictly standard, with the exception of being able to modify the gearing ratio. It has allowed me very worthy performances, so I recommend it.

It adds another interesting perspective to this car’s history.

Fantastic video with the pilot Teo Fabi and the designer G. Tonti.

I hope the reading was entertaining. See you in the next article!
